Stephen R. Setterberg, MD, is President, CEO, and founder of PrairieCare and PrairieCare Medical Group a Minnesota based psychiatric healthcare system providing specialized clinic and hospital-based services to children, adolescents, and adults. He is a board certified child, adolescent and adult Psychiatrist. Dr. Setterberg was a co-founder of Prairie St. John’s which was the original “parent-company” of PrairieCare. Prairie St. John’s was established in 1996 with the focus of creating a full continuum-of-care for an under-served geographical region in the midwest and was a pioneer of the widespread use of telemedicine to reach clients in rural areas. While at Prairie St. John’s, he filled such integral roles as CEO, Physician Executive, Medical Director and Research Psychiatrist. His ability and compassion have been invaluable to the development and application of systems and standards of care in use at Prairie St. John’s and PrairieCare. Dr. Setterberg’s clinical practice includes both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, and he continues to direct innovation and improvement in treatments and programs that benefit those with psychiatric disorders
Dr. Setterberg received his MD degree in 1984 from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He then moved to New York to pursue a residency in Psychiatry at Albert Einstein University where he also completed a fellowship in child and adolescent Psychiatry. Then in 1990 he completed a fellowship in Child Psychiatry Research at Columbia University where he would thereafter continue to participate in further research. Dr. Setterberg remained in New York while in Private Practice and as Medical Director of Child Psychiatry at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He returned to the Midwest in 1994 where he served as Medical Director and Chair of the Psychiatric Department at Dakota Heartland Health Systems. In 1996 he co-founded Prairie St. John’s which by 2009 operated 91 inpatient beds, including partial hospital, intensive outpatient, residential and clinic services. Prairie St. John’s began providing services in the Twin Cities in 2005, which rebranded as PrairieCare in 2009 where Dr. Setterberg continues to develop and expand services – preparing to open the first private psychiatric hospital in Minnesota for Children and Adolescents (Opening November 2010).
Dr. Setterberg was an Assistant Clinical Professor at Columbia University and is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota and University of North Dakota. He served on Workgroups for the development of the DSM-IV during its early development and was a part of numerous other committees. Dr. Setterberg has a passion for advancing the development and integration of effective treatment modalities. He has presented on over 20 topics relating to the childhood psychiatry and disorders and has co-authored over 9 publications in numerous professional journals.
